Jacquette’s Bakery has been Broomall’s go-to destination for special occasions, holidays or just to celebrate any day with something sweet, for nearly 50 years. Now, new owners Chris and Daniela Burling are carrying that beloved tradition forward while putting their own personal stamp on the longtime neighborhood bakery. Originally opened by Dennis Jacquette in 1980, the bakery has built its reputation on timehonored recipes, quality ingredients and the familiar treats that generations of customers have come to love.
Chris’s connection to the Jacquette family goes back to when he was a young kid growing up in Newtown Square. “I have fond memories of our families being friends,” he recalled. “We cooked delicious homemade meals together to bring to a men’s homeless shelter in Philadelphia and served them dinner. Dennis would always bring extras from the bakery. I specifically remember my affinity for French Cruellers.”
A graduate of Georgetown University, Chris has always embraced adventure and the opportunities that come with it. After college, he headed to America’s Southwest where he met his wife, Daniela. The couple later spent a brief period in Daniela’s hometown in Germany before moving to Hong Kong, where they built a life and spent the next 15 years.
In 2024, Chris and Daniela, along with their young sons, Fletcher and Nils, began looking toward a return to the United States. Chris came back to Newtown Square to spend time with his parents and explore what might be next for their family. He was open not only to finding a new place to call home, but also to taking his career in a completely new direction. “Not only were we open to where we would live, I was also open to entering a new industry,” Chris explained. When he learned that Jacquette’s was for sale, the opportunity felt like the right fit at just the right moment. “I knew it
would be an amazing opportunity. Sometimes timing is everything.”
When Chris officially took the reins in January 2025, Dennis continued working at the bakery for a while to help ensure a smooth transition. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for the systems that Dennis put in place,” said Chris. As co-owner, Daniela also learned every aspect of the business
including baking, production, planning and decorating. “We’ve updated the POS system to capture more data that will help us identify trends and increase efficiencies. We someday soon hope to revamp the website and offer online ordering,” Daniela explained.
“We want to make it as convenient as possible for the next generation of customers.”
When it comes to bakery items, longtime customers should not expect sudden changes to Jacquette’s tried-and-true formula. “We want to preserve the traditions and pastries that customers have come to love,” he said. Chris also remarked that the bakery’s enduring legacy is the sense of community it has created. “People have become friends here. we’ve built up a good sense of community that people want to come back to all the time. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to earn that kind of trust from your clientele.”
Along with customer favorites like cream filled doughnuts and chocolate chip pound cake, Chris and Daniela have added some new items, in some cases inspired by TikTok trends. “We’ve had requests for cake pops and dot cakes, which became really popular because of social media,” said Daniela. “It’s been fun to incorporate those items.”
When Chris and Daniela have the opportunity to work out front at the register, they enjoy connecting with regular customers and building lasting relationships. “It’s especially rewarding when they compliment one of the items,” Chris said. “At the end of the day, it’s about making people happy.” They’re also fortunate to have a reliable team that includes longtime employees as well as local high school students. “People here really enjoy their
work,” he added. “And we have a good time.”
Giving back to the community is an important part of Jacquette’s Bakery’s mission. In addition to sponsoring our hometown magazine, the bakery has supported a variety of local organizations and events, including the Culbertson Pumpkin Festival, local Little Leagues, Bandarama, and the Marple Public Library. “It’s important to us to support the community as much as we can,” said Chris.
