Amerikick Martial Arts: Teaching Discipline, Strength and Respect

Marple Friends & Neighbors, September 2026

From young children taking their first steps in karate to adults pursuing fitness, self-defense or lifelong learning, Amerikick Havertown is a place where families build strength, resilience and lasting connections. Owner Johnny Nunez has created an encouraging environment for children and adults alike to develop valuable life skills while embracing the values of respect, perseverance and leadership.

Located at 1254 West Chester Pike, Amerikick Havertown blends high-energy martial arts instruction with character development. “Our mission is to change lives one person at a time through martial arts, education and mentorship,” Johnny explained. “I wanted to build a community where every student and family member feels safe, supported, and welcome.”

As a young boy growing up in South Philly, Johnny was always on the move, full of energy and eager for a challenge. One of four siblings, martial arts gave Johnny the outlet he needed, channeling that energy into discipline, focus and confidence. “I was an active and energetic young kid. My parents knew martial arts would be a great outlet for me,” he recalled. He began taking karate lessons around age six and at age 14 started assisting at his six-year-old sister’s classes. “It gave me lifelong experiences, allowed me to feel connected to others and helped me overcome obstacles.”

What began as a way to stay active soon became a lifelong passion, shaping both his character and his career. After graduating from high school in Philadelphia, Johnny furthered his education at community college, and although initially interested in architecture, he knew an office environment wasn’t the right fit for his career. His passion for martial arts and wanting to give back led him to become a karate instructor. He eventually opened
up his own studio in the Spring of 2025.

As the owner and instructor of Amerikick Havertown, Johnny is dedicated to helping the next generation of students discover the same sense of purpose and personal growth that karate gave him. Amerikick Havertown is part of a franchise of martial arts studios that were established in 1967. A nationally recognized martial arts organization, it combines traditional karate instruction with modern leadership, character development, and personal growth programs.

Johnny’s belief is that martial arts is for everyone, regardless of age, gender or experience. “Each student can develop the confidence, discipline, and practical self-defense skills they need to succeed both on and off the mats,” he said. “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing our students achieve their personal goals, discover their potential, and become the best version of themselves.”

The martial arts classes for kids at Amerikick Havertown do more than teach self-defense. “We help children develop the confidence, discipline, and character they need to thrive at school, at home and in everyday life,” Johnny added. Every class builds essential life skills, including focus, respect, perseverance, goal setting and self-confidence.

Through the studio’s martial arts classes, children also learn practical, age-appropriate self-defense strategies to stay safe, handle bullying with confidence and make smart decisions under pressure. Johnny explained that beyond skills like balance and coordination, kids are learning skills they might not realize, like finding their voice and becoming more confident. “This is a place where they can come and be seen,” he said. “We have their best interest at heart.”

For adults looking to get fit, stronger and more confident, martial arts is one of the most effective full-body workouts available, blending strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility and functional movement into a single dynamic practice. “The classes challenge both the body and the mind, helping adults build lean muscle and improve endurance,” said Johnny.

Beyond physical fitness, Johnny explained that consistent training enhances balance, coordination, mobility and reaction time while increasing overall energy levels. The result isn’t just a stronger body; it’s greater confidence, sharper focus and the resilience to meet life’s daily demands. “The greatest reward comes from watching students overcome obstacles and achieve personal goals,” shared Johnny.

Being part of the Delaware County community has been another rewarding aspect of owning a local business. Amerikick Havertown has been proud to teach martial arts classes to Girl Scout troops, at local daycares and at the local YMCA. “I love being able to engage with people in the community,” said Johnny.

This summer, Amerikick Havertown became a Sponsor in our Friends & Neighbors magazine. “The magazine has been a fantastic resource in aiding us at Amerikick Havertown in what we do best. Making an impact in the community,” said Johnny. “They help peel back the curtain and show people martial arts isn’t just kicks and punches. It’s building leaders that do what’s right even when that isn’t easy.”

At Amerikick Havertown, community and family are at the heart of everything they do. “We know the names of all of our nearly hundred students and families,” Johnny said proudly. “We strive to be as family-oriented as possible.” Whether you’re returning to fitness, looking for a new challenge or simply striving for a healthier lifestyle, every class offers an opportunity to grow stronger in body, mind and character.
